Why Modern Farmhouse Isn’t Everyone’s Cup of Tea

by thebigbulbplant

If you were to survey American homeowners regarding their interior design preferences, you would probably find a lot of people enthusiastic about modern farmhouse. That seems to be the hottest look right now. It is so hot that interior decorators and DIY influencers alike are populating the internet with tons of blog posts and videos discussing anything and everything relating to it.

Truth be told, modern farmhouse is not everyone’s cup of tea. Despite its popularity, modern farmhouse is a look that some people just do not like. There are even people who despise it. That’s okay because we are all different. We should never forget that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And to some folks, modern farmhouse is not beautiful at all.

If you are not familiar with the modern farmhouse style, imagine a turn-of-the-century farmhouse that has been freshened up with some paint, new appliances, and a few decorations. That is pretty much what it’s all about.

Late 19th-century farmhouses have a pretty distinct look and feel. They became an endangered species of sorts when the industrial era kicked in. You can still find some of these older houses in rural areas around the country. Slowly but surely though, they are fading away.

Remodeling a genuine turn-of-the-century farmhouse to give it that modern farmhouse look is pretty straightforward. You already have the bare bones to work with. On the other hand, turning a 1990s McMansion into a modern farmhouse showcase is tougher. But it can be done.

  • Wood, Paint, and Decorations

Jami Ray Vintage is one of those DIY influencers whose videos and blog posts are all over the internet. The company consists of a husband-and-wife team who teach people how to decorate in the modern farmhouse style. They also buy older items at thrift stores and estate sales, freshen them up, and sell them in their shop.

Take a look around and you will notice that Jimmy Ray Vintage does a lot with wood and paint. Why? Because these are the two materials turn-of-the-century farmers had at their disposal. Their houses were built with wood. They did not have a lot of money for fancy facades of stone and brick work. They didn’t have money to invest in expensive tile floors.

What they could do is paint their wood. They could also add modest decorations made of things they no longer needed on the farm. Wash tubs became planters. A cracked crate no longer worthy of holding produce could be repurposed as a bookshelf.

  • Old and Distressed Pieces

Take a look at what Jami Ray Vintage has for sale and you’ll also notice a lot of pieces that look old and distressed. The old and distressed look is the hallmark of modern farmhouse. Perhaps that’s why it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Modern farmhouse looks to blend some of the elements of modern interior design with the look of the turn-of-the-century farmhouse utility.

To some brains, the two are incompatible. A person who is more into modern or contemporary design cannot see past the fact that a modern farmhouse kitchen table looks like it has seen better days. To that person’s mind, there is nothing modern about it. Everything in the house just looks old.

Despite the fact that some people can’t seem to wrap their brains around the modern farmhouse look, it is one of the hottest things in interior design right now. No, modern farmhouse is not everyone’s cup of tea. But a lot of people love it. If you are one of them, have at it.
